Harvard-Bangalore
Science Initiative
HBSI is a new initiative aimed at fostering collaboration in the natural
sciences between Harvard University and several academic institutions in Bangalore, India. Bangalore
is at the hub of Indian science, with the addition of several new institutes of
excellence such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research
(JNCASR), and the National Centre for
Biological Sciences (NCBS), which
complement the long tradition at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
The overall goal of this initiative is to build scientific
collaborations and exchange among the institutions.
In an important
step in this exchange, we have obtained support from the International Innovation
Grants Program for a second year to send several Harvard College students
for 10-12 weeks in the summer of 2008 to a laboratory of their choice in the
three institutes in Bangalore (NCBS, JNCASR and IISc). Although students in all
years are encouraged to apply, the
program may be most appropriate for advanced sophomores and juniors. We also
encourage applicants to locate specific labs they are interested in and contact
the investigators.
