Project Title: Characterizing the molecular mechanism of IdsE as a regulator of self-recognition and swarming behavior in bacterium Proteus mirabilis
I am studying molecular mechanisms that regulate self-recognition and social behavior in the bacterium Proteus mirabilis. P. mirabilis engages in a cooperative multicellular behavior, swarming, that is directed towards kin. Swarm behavior allows P. mirabilis to migrate efficiently across surfaces and is dependent on a complex developmental cycle. In the Gibbs lab, we are interested in the connections between the self-recognition system and swarming behavior.
