Research

With the guidance of my mentors, Ethan Garner and Eric Rubin, I’m visualizing the inner workings of bacteria.  Using genetics, biochemistry, structural methods and microscopy, I’m exploring how bacterial pathogens, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, respond to external assaults and thrive within dynamic environments.  I’m particularly interested in the molecular mechanisms they employ to modulate their cell wall in order to evade destruction by the immune system and antibiotics.  I’m hoping that my work will have an impact on the escalating molecular and chemical arms race between humans and rapidly evolving pathogens.
