Central Pattern Generators (CPGs) are ubiquitous and regulate a diverse set of rhythmic behaviors including: locomotion, chewing, breathing, and circadian rhythms, etc. I am interested in how CPGs carry out their functions – more specifically – the mechanisms underlying neural control of breathing. One of the less explored fields in studying the neural circuits located in the brainstem and spinal cord is the fundamental logic and organization of these networks. My current project aims to reconstruct the wiring diagram of the mammalian respiratory pacemaker circuit at the level of individual synapses. A functional connectomics approach will be applied to provide new insights and detailed information that are needed to develop a robust model of the neural circuits that mediate respiratory behavior.
