OVERVIEW: UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION
The Faculty of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology share a commitment to undergraduate education. This commitment is shown by the diverse offering of undergraduate concentrations and courses as well as the opportunity for hands-on research in MCB Faculty labs. In addition to these formal experiences, the MCB Faculty are dedicated to nurturing students during their scientific journeys.
The academic diversity of the MCB Faculty is reflected in three undergraduate concentrations outlined below: Molecular and Cellular Biology, Neurobiology, and Chemical and Physical Biology.
Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB)
The MCB concentration focuses on understanding biological processes through the study of molecules and their interactions in the context of cells and tissues. This concentration integrates methodologies ranging from chemistry and genetics to computer science and engineering.
The NEURO concentration showcases the science of how the nervous system organizes behavior. Concentrators investigate phenomena on vastly different scales, from molecules to societies, and draw upon many of the classical disciplines for experimental tools and explanatory frameworks.
Chemical and Physical Biology (CPB)
In the CPB concentration students apply quantitative tools, physical concepts, and chemical principles to the study of biology. The CPB emphasis on quantitative, physical, and chemical tools is a significant departure from traditional programs in the biological sciences.
In addition to the three concentrations, MCB Faculty members contribute to a wide array of other undergraduate courses, including Life Sciences classes, Freshman Seminars, and the General Curriculum.
