profile_image I am employed as a patent attorney at the Boston law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP. In this capacity I "prosecute" (i.e. draft and defend) patent applications from area universities and biotechnology companies. In addition, I work with the litigation department as an associate on various lawsuits - primarily patent infringement cases. Accordingly, my practice affords an opportunity to be exposed both to new emerging technologies, through my patent prosecution practice, and to the application of existing legal standards to these new and evolving technologies. As a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard in the laboratory of Dr. Tom Maniatis, I was principally interested in researching the role of chromatin structure in the regulation of gene expression. These studies include the biochemical and cellular characterization of Heterochromatin Protein 1 (HP1), a protein which is involved in the organization of transcriptionally silent regions of the chromosome. Recent cellular localization experiments suggest that this protein is part of a highly ordered structure within the nucleus. The role that this structure plays in regulating gene expression will be pursued. Two proteins which interact with HP1 (HIP1 and HIP2) have been isolated and their functions are also being investigated. My interests include another protein which appears to be involved in determining the transcriptional activity of chromatin by primarily structural means. Unlike HP1, High Mobility Group protein 1 (HMG 1) and its apparent homolog in fruit flies (D1) appear to positively affect gene expression by potentiating the action of classical transcriptional activators on a gene's promoter. Together these studies demonstrate that both the packaging of chromatin and its subsequent localization within the nucleus are critically involved in the regulation of gene expression
