MCB to Host 2025 Edsall Lecture with Dr. László Csanády

MCB to Host 2025 Edsall Lecture with Dr. László Csanády

The upcoming John T. Edsall Lecture will be delivered on November 13, 2025 by László Csanády, MD, PhD, a leading authority in the field of ion channel structure and function, currently serving as Chair of the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Semmelweis University (Budapest).

The John T. Edsall Lecture is an annual event established by MCB to honor the legacy of John Tileston Edsall (1902–2002), a pioneering biochemist and longtime Harvard faculty member. Edsall’s work significantly shaped the fields of protein chemistry and molecular biology, and his influence endures through this distinguished lecture series.

Dr. Csanády’s lab integrates electrophysiology (patch-clamp), structural biology, mutagenesis, kinetic modeling, and biochemistry to dissect gating mechanisms, ligand interactions, and regulatory modulation of these channels. Under his leadership, the department at Semmelweis has become a hub for ion channel research in Europe, and his contributions are widely recognized in the global membrane biophysics community.

“I’m delighted that László is this year’s speaker for the Edsall Lecture,” says MCB Chair Rachelle Gaudet. “He and I share a long-standing interest in ion channels and transporters, so our paths cross often. I’ve always admired his work for its rigor, clarity, and impact. His beautifully designed experiments have provided decisive insights into questions that have puzzled the field for years, especially through his groundbreaking studies of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator. His lectures are equally impressive and deeply engaging—clear and thoughtfully structured, making even the most complex mechanisms easy to follow.”
