Alicia Darnell, a graduate student from the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and a member of the O’Shea Lab, has been named as one of the recipients of the Derek C. Bok Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching of Undergraduates.
The Bok award is given to five teaching fellows who have been nominated by their departments, and is named after former Harvard president Derek Curtis Bok. The award comes with a $1,000 prize taken from a bequest from former Harvard medical professor David G. Nathan and his wife, Jean Louise Friedman Nathan.
Darnell worked as a teaching assistant for professors Briana Burton, Vlad Denic and Alex Schier for their course MCB 60; Cellular Biology and Molecular Medicine.
Of her work, Professor Schier said: “Alicia’s students adore her – she is extremely helpful, provides constructive feedback and creates a fun atmosphere. But she not only inspires her students but also the teaching fellows that work with her. She has gone above and beyond with her time, effort and resources to support MCB 60.”
