Research

Gaby received her Ph.D. from The Rockefeller University in 2024 working with Dr. Charles M. Rice to understand how the gene PLSCR1 inhibits SARS-CoV-2. Broadly, she is interested in the factors that shape pathogen evolution and the mechanisms that pathogens use to invade, exploit their hosts, and spread.

In the Elya lab, Gaby is pursuing several projects, the first of which is aimed at gaining genetic access to E. muscae, allowing the lab to perturb genes and delve into mechanistic studies of the fungus’ biology. In her second project, she is interested in understanding the factors the fungus uses to decide when it’s time to leave the hos
